Summer in Chicago: Temperatures flare, shootings spike and the city is stuck in status quo. Enter a mixed bag of underdogs ready to save whatever’s left of the day. Completely powerless but sky-high on passion, they join forces.  But as broken bones multiply and alliances splinter, the team is forced to draw the line between well meaning heroism and vigilante justice.

What the Critics Are Saying

“★★★★!”

Time Out Chicago

“Nobody else in Chicago writes anything like the massively talented Holter, whose poetic language often emerges in thrilling torrents…and his emotion and hope for the future cascades all over Prowess”

Chicago Tribune

“No-holds-barred! Loud, and brutal, and unrelenting, it is a cry from the gut…a play that confronts the violence and fear that comes with living in the often mortally dangerous city of Chicago.” Chicago Sun Times

Chicago Sun Times

“Stunningly good!”

Chicago Reader

“Impressive and immersive!…Prowess aggressively attacks our culture of complacency while offering a portrait of vigilantism grounded in social realism.”

Run Time
PROWESS runs 2 hours & 10 minutes, including one 10-minute intermission

Parking
There is a parking lot adjacent to Broadway Armory Park, 5917 N Broadway. The entrance to the lot is on Thorndale Avenue, and parking is $1.25 per hour.  We recommend parking for a total of 3 hours to ensure you will not be ticketed.

Transit Directions / CTA Red Line Changes
Broadway Armory Park is steps from the Thorndale Red Line Station. Exit the station and head west to Broadway and the Park is on the southeast corner. You can also take the #36 Broadway Bus to Thorndale Avenue.

Once you arrive at Broadway Armory Park, a member of Jackalope will greet you in the lobby. There are signs directing you to the theater, which is on the second level, above the gym. It’s a large building, so we recommend arriving 15 minutes prior to showtime to give ample time to make your way to the theater.

Accessibility
Jackalope is proud to produce in Broadway Armory Park, but it’s a big, old building that can be difficult to navigate. We suggest giving yourself 15 minutes of extra travel time once you’re here, and to please let us know in advance by emailing jackalope@jackalopetheatre.org if you have specific accessibility requests or plan on using the elevator, so that we can assist you.

About Jackalope Theatre

In the spring of 2008, three senior directing majors at Columbia College Chicago joined together in a class project for their Theater Management Techniques course. Their assignment was to create a fictional theatrical production company. The project went so well that they decided to make their project a reality, and that summer Jackalope Theatre Company was born. These founding members, AJ Ware, Kaiser Ahmed, and Gus Menary were soon joined by Andrew Burden Swanson. Since that time, Jackalope has evolved into a dynamic, respected arts organization.

Now in our 8th Season, we produce three full length plays and a one-act  festival of new plays every year, as well as support artistic programming of every discipline at The Frontier, our storefront home in Edgewater.

“We cultivate theatre that manifests
the adventure deeply rooted in the American mythos.”

We are highways.
We are jetstreams.
We are radio towers.
We are the dust
and the fight
and the west.
We are the spirit of expansion.

We stage productions of newly developed and established American works. We create theatrical experiences that encourage our audiences to consider what it means to be American, by telling stories that speak to our nation’s diversity of cultural backgrounds. We also seek to inspire a new generation of theatre artists through our classes and community events.
